University Profile & History

Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), formerly known as University of Indore, was established in 1964 by an Act of the Madhya Pradesh Legislature. The university is named after Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, the 18th-century warrior queen and philanthropist who made Indore her capital and pioneered progressive governance, social reform and infrastructural development across Malwa.

What began as a small teaching and affiliating university has grown into one of the largest state universities in central India, with 3 campuses — Nalanda (administrative), Takshashila (academic) and Avanti (technical) — together housing 30+ university teaching departments, 6 autonomous institutes, and a network of 260+ affiliated colleges spread across 7 districts of western Madhya Pradesh.

The university offers more than 100 academic programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and diploma levels across 16 faculties. With a cumulative enrolment exceeding 3 lakh students and a faculty strength of over 2,000, DAVV is recognised for its research output, industry linkages, and inclusive access to quality higher education.

DAVV is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Sections 2(f) and 12B of the UGC Act, 1956. The university has been accredited by NAAC and participates in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
